Pierre Menard presided over the Illinois Territorial Legislature for 4 years and served as the state's first Lieutenant Governor. The home, built in 1815, is a fine example of French Creole-style architecture featuring a double-hipped roof and a galerie along the front facade. Upstairs the living quarters feature period furnishings, the ground floor contains a museum. Other structures on the grounds include a stone kitchen, reconstructed brick smokehouse, a poteau sur solle privy, and a stone springhouse.
