The movable portion of Lock and Dam 17 is 1,121 feet long and has 8 Tainter gates and 3 roller gates. It can lift traffic up to 8 feet, though an average lift is 4 feet. This lock and dam has no observation deck and visitors will not be able to get close enough to watch barges locking through.
