Southernmost Illinois

Fort Defiance, known as Camp Defiance during the American Civil War, was a former military fortification located at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Although the fort is no longer there, it is a great place to fish and view the confluence from atop the Boatman’s Memorial. It’s also the southernmost and lowest point in the state, at 279 feet above sea level.
