The Great River Road in Illinois

Alexis Phelps was a fur trader with the Sauk and Fox. He was friends with Judge Stephen Douglas, Abraham Lincoln, and Chief Black Hawk. He moved to Oquawka and completed his home there in 1833. Today, the house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can visit the site, but the building is only open for special events.
