Albany Mounds is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Illinois. It is the only Middle Woodland, or Hopewell, site owned by the state and is older than Cahokia Mounds or Dickson Mounds. Originally it consisted of 96 burial mounds, today 39 remain in good condition. A walking/biking path with interpretive signs leads to various burial mounds.
